What is back pain?

Back pain is discomfort, stiffness, aching, or sharp pain that occurs in the upper, middle, or lower back. It is one of the most common reasons patients seek pain management care and can affect posture, movement, sleep, work, and daily activities. Back pain may be mild and temporary, or it may become chronic when related to spine conditions, nerve irritation, arthritis, disc problems, or injury.

Back pain may stay in one area or travel into the hips, buttocks, legs, or feet depending on the underlying cause.

What causes back pain?

Back pain can be caused by many conditions involving the spine, joints, muscles, discs, or nerves. Common causes include muscle strain, muscle spasms, arthritis, spinal stenosis, bulging discs, slipped discs, herniated discs, sciatica, pinched nerves, work-related injuries, motor vehicle accident injuries, and chronic spine conditions.

Some patients may develop pain after lifting, bending, twisting, poor posture, repetitive movement, or trauma. Others may experience back pain from inflammation, nerve compression, joint irritation, or age-related changes in the spine.

Where is the back pain located?

Back pain may be located in the upper back, middle back, lower back, or around the spine. Some patients feel pain directly in the back muscles, while others feel pain near the spine, hips, buttocks, or sacroiliac joint area. When nerves are irritated or compressed, pain may travel down the leg, which is commonly associated with sciatica or a pinched nerve.

Back pain may feel dull, sharp, burning, tight, or radiating. It may also be associated with numbness, tingling, weakness, stiffness, limited movement, or pain that worsens with standing, sitting, bending, or walking.

Care and treatment for back pain

At Liberty Pain Care, back pain treatment begins with a detailed evaluation to determine the source of pain. This may include a review of symptoms, medical history, prior injuries, activity level, pain patterns, and physical examination findings. The doctor may assess range of motion, posture, muscle tenderness, strength, reflexes, and signs of nerve irritation. When needed, diagnostic imaging such as X-rays, MRI, or other testing may be recommended.

Treatment is personalized based on the patient’s diagnosis and symptoms. Conservative care may include activity modification, medication management, physical therapy, supportive bracing, or other non-surgical treatment options.

Liberty Pain Care offers several interventional procedures for back pain, including cervical, thoracic, and lumbar injections, epidural steroid injections, facet joint injections, sacroiliac joint injections, selective nerve root blocks, and trigger point injections. These treatments may help reduce inflammation, calm irritated nerves, relieve muscle-related pain, and improve mobility.

For chronic or persistent back pain, advanced options may include radiofrequency ablation, platelet-rich plasma therapy, prolotherapy, stem cell therapy, peripheral nerve stimulation, or spinal cord stimulation depending on the patient’s condition and treatment goals.

Prevention for back pain

Back pain cannot always be prevented, but healthy habits may help lower the risk of recurring pain. Patients can support spine health by maintaining good posture, using proper lifting techniques, staying active, strengthening core muscles, stretching regularly, maintaining a healthy weight, and avoiding long periods of sitting without movement.

Patients should also avoid ignoring pain that travels into the legs, causes weakness, or continues to worsen, as these symptoms may require further evaluation.
