What is neck pain?

Neck pain is discomfort, stiffness, soreness, or sharp pain that occurs in the cervical spine, which is the upper part of the spine located in the neck. Neck pain can affect movement, posture, sleep, work, and daily activities. Some patients may have mild stiffness, while others may experience severe pain that limits their ability to turn the head, look up or down, drive, or sit comfortably for long periods.

Neck pain may stay in the neck or travel into the shoulders, upper back, arms, hands, or head depending on the cause. When nerves are irritated or compressed, patients may also experience numbness, tingling, weakness, or radiating pain.

What causes neck pain?

Neck pain can develop from several causes involving the muscles, joints, discs, ligaments, or nerves. Common causes include muscle strain, muscle spasms, arthritis, poor posture, spinal stenosis, bulging discs, slipped discs, herniated discs, pinched nerves, work-related injuries, sports injuries, and motor vehicle accident injuries such as whiplash.

Some patients develop neck pain from long periods of sitting, looking down at phones or computers, sleeping in an awkward position, repetitive movements, or lifting strain. Others may experience neck pain from inflammation, joint irritation, nerve compression, or age-related changes in the cervical spine.

Where is the neck pain located?

Neck pain may be felt in the front, back, or sides of the neck. It may also spread into the shoulders, upper back, shoulder blades, arms, hands, or fingers. Some patients may experience headaches that begin at the base of the skull, which may be related to muscle tension, cervical spine irritation, or occipital neuralgia.

Neck pain may feel dull, tight, sharp, burning, or radiating. Symptoms may include stiffness, limited range of motion, muscle tenderness, spasms, headaches, numbness, tingling, or weakness in the arms or hands.

Care and treatment for neck pain

At Liberty Pain Care, neck pain treatment begins with a detailed evaluation to identify the source of pain. This may include reviewing symptoms, medical history, prior injuries, posture, activity level, and pain patterns. The provider may assess range of motion, muscle tenderness, strength, reflexes, nerve irritation, and whether pain travels into the shoulders, arms, or hands. When needed, diagnostic imaging such as X-rays, MRI, or other testing may be recommended to evaluate the cervical spine, discs, joints, nerves, and surrounding soft tissue.

Treatment is personalized based on the patient’s diagnosis and symptoms. Conservative care may include activity modification, medication management, physical therapy, posture correction, stretching, strengthening exercises, supportive bracing, or other non-surgical treatment options.

Liberty Pain Care offers several interventional treatment options for neck pain, including cervical injections, epidural steroid injections, facet joint injections, selective nerve root blocks, trigger point injections, and ultrasound-guided nerve blocks. These treatments may help reduce inflammation, relieve muscle-related pain, calm irritated nerves, and improve mobility.

For patients with chronic or persistent neck pain, additional options may include radiofrequency ablation, platelet-rich plasma therapy, prolotherapy, stem cell therapy, peripheral nerve stimulation, spinal cord stimulation, headache and occipital nerve blocks, or Botox for pain and migraine depending on the patient’s condition and treatment goals.

Prevention for neck pain

Neck pain cannot always be prevented, especially when caused by injury, arthritis, or chronic spine conditions. However, patients may reduce their risk by maintaining good posture, taking breaks from prolonged sitting or screen use, keeping the computer monitor at eye level, stretching regularly, strengthening the neck and upper back muscles, and using proper lifting techniques.

Patients should also avoid ignoring pain that travels into the arms, causes numbness or weakness, or continues to worsen, since these symptoms may require further evaluation.
