What is knee pain?
Knee pain is discomfort, soreness, stiffness, or inflammation in or around the knee joint. It can affect people of all ages and may make it difficult to walk, climb stairs, exercise, bend the knee, or complete daily activities comfortably. Knee pain may be temporary after an injury, or it may become chronic when caused by arthritis, joint degeneration, tendon or ligament problems, or ongoing inflammation.
What causes knee pain?
Knee pain can develop from many different causes. Common causes include arthritis, sports injuries, tendon or ligament strain, muscle imbalance, overuse, inflammation, work-related injuries, and motor vehicle accident injuries. Some patients may experience knee pain from damage to the cartilage, tendons, ligaments, or surrounding soft tissue. Others may develop pain from long-term wear and tear of the joint.
Because knee pain can come from several different structures, a proper evaluation is important to identify the source of the pain and recommend the right treatment plan.
Where is the knee pain located?
Knee pain may be felt in the front, back, inside, outside, or deep within the knee joint. Some patients feel pain around the kneecap, while others may feel pain along the sides of the knee, behind the knee, or around the tendons and ligaments. Knee pain may also be associated with swelling, stiffness, weakness, instability, clicking, locking, or difficulty bearing weight.
The location and type of pain can help determine whether the problem may be related to arthritis, inflammation, a ligament injury, tendon irritation, cartilage damage, or another knee condition.
Care and treatment for knee pain
At Liberty Pain Care, knee pain treatment begins with a detailed evaluation of the patient’s symptoms, medical history, activity level, and prior injuries. The doctor may assess swelling, tenderness, range of motion, strength, stability, and pain with movement. When needed, diagnostic imaging such as X-rays, MRI, or other testing may be recommended to better understand the cause of pain.
Treatment depends on the cause and severity of the condition. Conservative care may include activity modification, medication management, supportive bracing, physical therapy, or other non-surgical options to reduce pain and improve function.
For patients with ongoing pain or inflammation, Liberty Pain Care may offer ultrasound-guided joint steroid injections to target the affected area with greater precision. Additional options may include ultrasound-guided nerve blocks for nerve-related pain. For chronic knee pain, arthritis, or soft tissue injury, regenerative treatments such as platelet-rich plasma therapy, prolotherapy, or stem cell therapy may also be considered when appropriate.
Prevention for knee pain
Knee pain cannot always be prevented, especially when it is caused by injury, arthritis, or aging. However, patients may reduce their risk by maintaining a healthy weight, staying active, strengthening the muscles around the knee, stretching regularly, wearing supportive footwear, and avoiding sudden increases in physical activity. Proper form during exercise and sports can also help protect the knee from strain or injury.
Patients with recurring knee pain should avoid ignoring symptoms, since early evaluation may help prevent the condition from becoming worse.
